From a young age, Matt displayed heroic qualities by selflessly saving the life of a stranger, when he pushed an old man out of the way of a truck. He imbibed his father’s instructions, not just by making something better out of himself through education, but from what his father told him about the tenacity of Murdock men and how they always got up from a fight. His father’s death weighed heavily upon his conscious, blaming himself for his father’s decision to not throw the mobster rigged boxing match.
Matt’s ‘daddy issues’ were compounded by Stick, whom Matt looked up to. Stick taught that you had to control your feelings, to not become close to anybody, and mocked Matt when he failed as a way to motivate him to try harder, which all became ingrained deep into Matt’s psyche, despite Matt’s later refusal of Stick’s definition of himself. Stick diagnosed Matt’s uncontrollable rage, and taught him to control and harness that anger through through fighting. The moment he began to display attachment toward him as a father figure, Stick heartless abandoned the young Matt. This rejection has left Matt with difficulty forging real emotional connections. As an adult he continues to seek approval, confirmation and forgiveness from another fatherly figure, the priest, Father Lantom.
In fact, Matt’s religion is very important to him, despite being a very private matter between him and God. An Irish Catholic does not just confess his sins, but earns his way back into God's graces, not simply by prayer or fasting, but through actions. That is how a real Irish Catholic repents, and so while Matt feels like he’s doing the right thing as a vigilante, he’s also plagued with guilt over his actions when he allows his anger get the better of him. He is loathe to admit it, but he enjoys beating the living hell out of his adversaries, and he gets a thrill from being the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen. Matt questions whether or not he’s doing the right thing in the eyes of God - is he instead allowing the Devil to trick him into thinking he’s doing good, yet all the while letting evil into his heart? In true Catholic form, on a certain level he enjoys being the martyr, suffering. The one line Matt will not cross is killing, firmly believing that his job is to bring bad guys to justice, but punishment is determined by God. It’s that line which Matt teeters upon each night Daredevil goes out, because there have been times when he’s nearly broken that promise.
His tendency is to let his Daredevil nature consume him, but it’s his friends and job that reel him back into being human. They ground him, stabilize him, make him laugh. He finds it difficult to lie to them, and is incredibly loyal and protective of those who he lets close. Sometimes he wonders if his friends are better off without him, or maybe he ought not to become attached, like Stick taught, but the truth is that Matt needs them to balance his personality. As a lawyer, he can make sure the innocent are given a fair trial in court, and his desire to help those most defenseless is stronger than any temptation of money or position in a large law firm.
However strong his friends may be to help him, his 'Devil' nature remains part of his personality. It teeters dangerously between using his alter-ego to help people, to getting an adrenaline rush from putting himself in danger and seriously kicking somebody's ass, to using the physical pain he receives during a fight as a sort of penance to help forgive him of his sins. He lives a split life, and hasn't been able to figure out how to merge them together, holistically. Practically, in Hell's Kitchen, he thinks it's impossible, and his friends (Foggy, Karen) agree. Matt needs to keep his two lives separate, at all costs.
When he eats, he always mentally picks out and identifies the different flavors. For this reason, he doesn't like highly processed foods because he tastes the chemicals; ideally, when buying for himself, he'll choose natural and organic
His favorite food is Mexican.
Doesn't read the Bible or go to Church regularly, but makes a point of saying the rosary every day. The rosary he uses was given by his father - he was told it had belonged to his mother
Doesn't wear cologne, and his deodorant and laundry detergents are scentless - these odors on or close to his own body disturb and distract him.
Listens to books on MP3 - he likes histories and historical fiction. Is currently listening to Game of Thrones because of all the fuss he hears about the program. He's not impressed.
Ambidextrous, but as Matt Murdock, he primarily uses his right hand.
Has a secret desire to try to ride a motorcycle
Matt is a Catholic, so his life is full of regrets. His guilty conscious produces a constant stream of them. But if he really thought about it, the biggest regret he had was not coming clean to Foggy about his enhanced senses earlier on. Foggy was his closest and best friend, the person he'd known since college - they shared their hopes, their dreams, their fears, through good times and bad. And yet, Matt kept his powers a secret from him. Maybe Matt was so accustomed to hiding what he could do from people that he didn't know how to tell Foggy? Maybe he was worried that Foggy would freak out and not want to be his friend any more? Maybe he said he trusted Foggy, but in reality Matt was worried of rejection? Maybe he was so accustomed to leading a double life, pretending not to have these powers because he wanted so desperately to fit in with everybody else, despite his blindness? Or maybe Stick's paranoia left a lasting impression on Matt's young mind so that he wasn't able to trust anybody?
Whatever the reason, as the years passed, it became easier and easier to carry on with the facade. The day when the metaphorical shit hit the fan, and Foggy found out that not only were his other senses enhanced, but that he was also the Devil of Hell's Kitchen, Matt was sure he'd lost his friend, forever. Foggy's rage was justified, and he had no excuses for his behavior. All Matt could do was try to explain what happened and how to a confused and upset man whom he betrayed. Matt considers himself very fortunate that Foggy forgave him, and that their friendship was repaired, because Matt doesn't know what he would do without him.
One Moment of Pride
After Matt lost his sight, his father, Jack Murdock, noticed how quickly he picked up learning Braille, and was impressed by his intelligence. Jack wanted his son to use his brains so he'd do better in life than his old man, a third-rate boxer taking dives for the mob. It was in his father's memory that Matt continued to educate himself; he earned a scholarship and went on to Columbia University, eventually graduating summa cum laude in his class. This was Matt's greatest moment of pride - climbing the steps of that stage on graduation day to accept his diploma. The reason Matt chose to become a lawyer was so he could put away criminals like the men that murdered his father, using the law to prosecute and put them behind bars. Nobody else should have to suffer at the hands of those that broke the law.
Enhanced Senses: Murdock possesses four senses, besides sight, enhanced to a superhuman level. He claims to constantly feel numerous things, including balance, direction, minuscule changes in air density, vibrations, and blankets of temperature variations, that are usually imperceptible to human beings. That, combined with his acute hearing and olfactory senses, allows Murdock to evaluate his surroundings in what he describes as an "Impressionistic painting" of the world around him, which, according to him, looks like "the world on fire."
* Enhanced Hearing: Matt's hearing is so acute, that he can clearly hear people converse at great distances away, hear people's heartbeats, and hear Claire's bones shifting as she breathed. Matt can focus on what he hears; in a crowded courtroom with the judge speaking, and heard a juror's heartbeat accelerate when James Wesley entered the room. Hearing the changes in people's heartbeats allows Matt to predict how they feel and what actions they'll take, such as attack or run. He was also able to memorize the pattern of Wesley's watch so he could follow the latter. When forced to improvise while fighting extremely stealthy Hand ninjas, Matt was able to effectively keep track of their movements by listening to their breaths and the sound of their swords cutting through the air.
*Lie Detection: Matt's hearing is so acute, that he can tell whether people are lying or not, based on the rate of their heartbeats.
*Enhanced Smell: His olfactory senses are so good, that he can smell a man's scent of stale cigarettes and cheap cologne three floors above him and through several walls. When he was a boy, his sense was already so acute, that he could smell that an old man sitting at a bench across from him had cancer. By smelling an old cigarette, Matt could tell that whoever smoked it previously had rotten teeth. He was even able to smell that Foggy had onions in his lunch, at the time, two days ago.
*Enhanced Taste: Matt was able to tell that Claire had ripped open some of the stitches on her back, due to tasting copper in the air from the blood of her open wound. Stick taught him how to train this sense, allowing him to pick out every individual ingredient of the ice cream he was eating, including that the milk used came from three different dairy farms, and that the man who served him used a certain type of soil in his garden.
*Enhanced Touch: Matt can feel the presence of those around him through vibrations, air currents and body temperatures. He can dodge attacks and even bullets by feeling them cut through the air, creating ripples of currents only detectable by him. He locates enemies and hidden electrical machines such as elevators, alarms, and locks through walls and even from different floors by feeling the vibrations they make from moving, whether they their footsteps or electrical impulses.
*Enhanced Thermoreception: The sense of heat and the absence of heat by the skin and internal skin passages. Matt can sense changes in heat in the environment. Matt could even feel the heat generated from the blood spilling from a gunshot wound by distinguishing the difference in temperature.
Enhanced Endurance: By mastering his body's sense of Nociception (ability of a body to sense potential harm) Matt can numb himself to pain. This allows Matt to take severe damage. Matt still feels the pain and his body is still damaged, he just can suppress these feelings allowing him to continue on fighting or to escape and find medical attention.
Enhanced Balance: Matt's sense of balance is superhuman, giving him perfect equilibrium, greatly increasing his agility and refining his movements.
Echolocation: Matt possesses an advanced form of human echolocation, he is able to detect objects in his environment by sensing echoes from those objects, by actively creating and listening for sounds - for example tapping his cane, stomping of his enemies feet, raindrops or rattling chains. He can interpret the sound waves reflected by nearby objects, accurately identifying their location and size.
Electroreception: Matt is able to detect electric fields, similar to a shark. When out on a mission with Elektra, Matt was able to find a hidden room by feeling an electrical current coming off the wall.
Master Martial Artist: Despite being blind, Matt was rigorously trained in martial arts by Stick at a young age, and excelled. He continued training himself, despite Stick giving up on him, and Matt eventually used his skills to fight crime as the vigilante "Daredevil". Daredevil's fighting style incorporates boxing, Muay Thai, grounding-and-pounding, Kung Fu, Judo, Aikido, Capoeira, Taekwondo, Escrima, tricking, and pro-wrestling.
Master Acrobat: Matt incorporates gymnastics and acrobatics into his fighting style as he battles opponents, and could already do several agile flips as a child. He is able to quickly move over rooftops and climb buildings, managing to keep up with a car this way.
Expert Marksman: Because of his enhanced senses, Matt has an increased awareness of where objects are, allowing him impressive marksmanship with both firearms and throwing weapons.
Staff Mastery: Taught by Stick, Matt is highly skilled in using both a pair of eskrima sticks (has one set that are individual and another that are connected by a retracting cord), or a single staff in combat.
Multilingualism: Matt speaks fluent English and Spanish, having studied the latter at college. He reads American Braille.
Lawyer: Matt is a persuasive and trained lawyer, having graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University
Meditation: Matt uses meditation to improve his abilities and heal his injuries faster.
Musical Ability: In church, Matt learned to play the piano for the choir, though he doesn't use this skill very often anymore.
